About the game

The sky fell. You stayed.

It started as a meteor shower worth driving out to see. Then the streaks kept coming, what landed was not stone, and a night later a solar flare took the radio, the phones and the internet with it. You were up at the family cabin below St. Brigid's for a hunting trip, and the only road out now lies in a crater under a hundred fallen pines. Nobody is getting in and nobody is getting out. So you stay: keep the hearth lit, boil your water, and learn to read the sky.

Whatever fell has changed the air. One day bakes like August and the next buries the trail in snow; a scorcher empties your canteen, rain soaks you toward pneumonia, and a white-out in the high country can kill you between one landmark and the next. Hunt deer and moose with rifle, pistol, pump shotgun or a recurve bow and butcher every carcass by hand, fight fish on the line, set nets and bird traps, forage, cook, dry meat and grow wheat and corn. Come in from downwind, because the animals smell you first. Wolves hunt in packs, the bear in the high country gives no warning, and something stranger walks the valley at night.

The valley has a past. St. Brigid's stands roofless on its knoll above the ruins of its village and schoolhouse. Climb the radio mast and coax the dead handset back to life, pick the locks on hidden cache cases, follow scraps of somebody else's map, cross the frozen tarn, explore an abandoned summer camp on a snowy lake, and go down into the black water under the mountain. Save a dog from a wolf and it will follow you anywhere; return a stranded hiker's pack and Ruth will trade with you on a gold balance. And when you want company, a friend can join you to help a field agency reclaim the valley.

Features

What you’ll do

A valley that breathes

New weather every dawn: heat waves, thunderstorms, snow and deadly blizzards, with green meteor showers and the aurora by night.

Hunt to eat

Rifle, pistol, pump shotgun and a recurve bow you have to find. Read tracks and blood, mind the wind, and butcher every carcass by hand.

Live off the land

Fish with a real fight on the line, set nets and bird traps, forage, cook over your own fire, dry meat and farm wheat and corn.

Survival with real stakes

Hunger, thirst, body heat and stamina, plus bleeding, broken bones, food poisoning and pneumonia that each need their own care.

You are not alone

A rescued dog that follows you between regions, and Ruth, a stranded hiker who trades on a gold balance.

A place with a past

A ruined church and village, a radio mast to bring back to life, locked caches, a deep cave and an abandoned lakeside camp. No quest markers.

Survive together

A separate two-player mode: break infected craters with the axe, pulse poisoned soil with an EMP, and trade samples with field researchers.

Your way, or Hardcore

Lucky, Survivor or Storm difficulty, a character and dog creator, a Hardcore mode with one life, and the whole game in English or Spanish.

Co-op

Bring a friend

Co-op is a separate two-player mode for a host and a guest, both in first person, joined online with an invite code or over a home network. Together you work with the Valley Field Agency to reclaim eight infected sites across St. Brigid's Hollow, Cailleach's Bowl, the Pass Road and Camp Tikihama: clear the green-tinged wolves, bears and stags guarding each one, break crater cores with your axe and pulse infected soil with an EMP you craft. Hunt deer for venison and field samples to trade with three researchers for ammunition and supplies, and spend the agency credits you both earn on coat colours. If a hunter goes down, the partner can help them up, or the agency recovers them after thirty seconds. Push-to-talk voice and text chat keep you in touch, there are five co-op achievements, and the expedition saves on the host's computer, separate from your solo games. The single-player story, its scripted events, the trader and the dog stay in the solo game.
